Fairfield High’s new Sports Leadership Council (SLC) wanted to make a difference in the community. After debating different opportunities to create a legacy, the group of stand-out student-athletes decided to initiate a reading program. Their intent was to promote literacy in the community. The group reached out to the 1st Grade team at Cleo Gordon Elementary and, after a couple days of planning, a partnership was formed. Members of the SLC will visit Cleo Gordon weekly to interact with small groups of 1st grade readers, hoping to influence their literacy skills. Additionally, the SLC aims to provide the younger student with positive role models who participate in sports, but more importantly, excel in the classroom.
