The venue: Calaveras County Fairgrounds on a beautiful Saturday for racing. The course: Flat for the 1st mile, a couple of hills in the 2nd mile, and a short hill followed by a downhill finish for the 3rd mile. The athletes: Sophomores Jessica Singh and Kelly Cordova who did not want their season to end. They made sure that it didn’t as they both ran great
races to move on to the section meet. Singh and Cordova were the only two girls on the team to race on Saturday and they made Fairfield proud. They raced in a field of 189 Division 3 Varsity Girls and finished 31st (Singh, 21:42) and 44th (Cordova, 22:30) respectively.
The sub-section format for advancing to the section meet is the following: The top 10 teams (with their 7 runners) advance to the section meet as well as the next 10 individuals. Singh was the 3rd individual qualifier while Cordova was the 8th individual qualifier. Singh and Cordova will gear up for another week of practice as their eyes are on the section meet which will be held in Folsom.
As for the Varsity Boys side it was heartbreak for Junior Xavier Estrada as he missed qualifying for the section meet by 4 seconds. Xavier had a solid season for the Falcons and it was a sad sight to see it end the way it did. But his spirits did not stay down for long as he said after he found out the news “I’ll be back stronger, fitter, and faster next season.”
The Varsity Boys team placed 19th in the team rankings. The individuals place and times are as follows:
56th – Xavier Estrada(Junior) 18:27
74th – Gabe Estrada(Freshman) 19:09
119th – Mohamed Yousif(Freshman) 20:46 – Personal Record
122nd – Tyree Lewis(Senior) 20:51
151st – Osman Yousif(Sophomore) 22:09 – Personal Record.
The next meet is at Willow Hills in Folsom on Saturday, November 12th.
